Why is the ATM not letting me deposit? ›

Possible reasons could be improperly following prompts on the screen, inserting the cash incorrectly, or attempting to deposit some money with an out-of-network ATM.

You may not be able to deposit cash outside of your bank's network at all, unless the ATM has an existing partnership with your bank. Some institutions let you deposit cash at an out-of-network ATM but charge you for the transaction.

The ATM reads the images of the bills and compares them to images provided by the U.S. Treasury Department. If a bill is worn, folded or has extraneous marks on it, its image will not match and it will be rejected. You will need to replace the bills, make deposits at the Teller windows or bring to CRO to deposit.

Paying in cash

Take your Cash Deposit Card to the counter at any Post Office® branch and tell them what amount you'd like to deposit. Hand them the cash. Then swipe your card and accept the amount that appears on the screen if it's correct. The amount that you deposit will be recorded on our system the same day.

Now for the all-important question: When will your ATM deposit be available in your checking account? Some cash deposits might be available right away. As for checks, not all banks follow the same schedule, but you can usually withdraw or use the full amount in two business days—sometimes sooner.

The maximum amount varies by bank. At Santander Bank, for example, there's a daily mobile deposit limit of $2,500 for customers who've had an account for at least 90 days. Otherwise, the daily limit is $1,000.

When you pay cash in at the Post Office® on any day of the week using a debit card or Cash Deposit Card, your deposit will show on your account and be available to use the same day.

While financial institutions typically don't restrict how much cash you can deposit at an ATM, you will generally face a limit on how many bills you can insert into the machine at one time.

What if my deposit is still not available on the 2^nd business day after the day of my deposit? For your protection and the bank's protection, we may place an extended hold on some deposits for up to 5 business days after the business day of your deposit.

Banks are required to report when customers deposit more than $10,000 in cash at once. A Currency Transaction Report must be filled out and sent to the IRS and FinCEN. The Bank Secrecy Act of 1970 and the Patriot Act of 2001 dictate that banks keep records of deposits over $10,000 to help prevent financial crime.

To answer the question “Can you deposit cash at an ATM?”, the answer is yes, you can – but not without some important caveats. For example, some ATMs don't accept cash deposits, or you may have to find an ATM that's part of your bank or in a participating network.

For instance, large brick-and-mortar bank Wells Fargo states in its deposit account agreement that non-account owners are not allowed to deposit cash into consumer accounts. From a bank's standpoint, prohibiting cash deposits can help prevent money laundering and fraud. It's also expensive for the bank to process cash.

If an ATM takes your cash or check and doesn't deposit it, stay calm and contact your bank immediately. Note the time and location of the incident, take a photo of any error messages, and report the incident to a bank employee.

Account Balance: Verify that you have sufficient funds in your account to cover the withdrawal amount you're trying to make. Overdrawing your account can lead to transaction failures. Daily Limits: Most banks impose daily withdrawal limits on ATM transactions. Check if you've exceeded your daily withdrawal limit.

This rejection can occur for various reasons, such as insufficient funds in the depositor's account, discrepancies in the provided account details, a hold or freeze on the account, or suspicious activity triggering security measures.
