The Boeing 787Dreamlineris one the most technologically advanced aircraft inBritish Airways’ fleet and are designed to boost wellbeing and offer the best possible customer experience.
The Boeing 787has the largest windows of any commercial airliner. The increase in size allows a greater number of customers to takein some of the amazing views that can be seen in flight, not just the person sitting nearest the window. Instead ofpull downblinds, each window has its own dimmer switch to alter the amount of light coming into the cabin.
In all aircraft types, an integrated LED mood lighting system reflects daylight andnight timebrightness and helps customers’ bodies adjust to different time-zones. It offers a smoother journey, with built in sensors countering the effects of turbulence, reducing nausea for those customers who suffer from motion sickness. With lower cabin air pressure than traditional aircraft, customers will notice an increased amount of oxygen and moisture in the cabin air, helping to reduce the effects ofjet-lagand dry eyes.
The 787 has impressive environmental credentials. It can fly for almost 10,000 miles without refuelling – further than the Boeing777anduses 20per cent less fuel than similarly sized aircraft. This means a reduction in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. Lightweight, composite materials make up 50 per cent of the primary structure of the787, including the fuselage and wing. The aircraft’s advanced monitoring systems allow it to report system maintenance requirements to ground-based computer systems during flight, instantly alerting engineers to any adjustments necessary to improve efficiency.
The Dreamliner has a much smaller noise footprint than its predecessors - 60 per cent smaller than similar sized aircraft and no sound of more than 85 decibels - about the level of loud traffic heard from the side of the road.
Fleet and Cabins
A total of 42 Boeing 787 aircraft are setto join British Airways, becoming the mainstay of the airline's long-haul fleet.
British Airways operate all three variants of the 787 Dreamliner, the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10.
The first of theairline's 787-8Dreamliner's joined the fleet in summer 2013 andfeatures 214 seats across three cabins; Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy)and World Traveller (economy).
The 35-seat Club World cabin in a 2-3-2 configuration on the 787-8 was the first tofeature a new triple seat configuration with one middle seat rather than two, to offer additional privacy, with the rear-facing seat featuring an additional stowage drawer. All ofthe Club World seats feature a reading light and simple-to-use footstool.
The aircraft offers an intimate 25-seat World Traveller Plus cabin in a 2-4-2 configuration and a 154-seat World Traveller cabin in a 3-3-3 layout.
787-9The first of the airline’s 787-9s arrived at the endof September 2015 andis 20ft longer than the787-8 and features 216 seats across four cabins: First, Club World,World Traveller Plus andWorld Traveller.
The main difference between British Airways’ 787-8s and the -9s is the inclusion of the First cabin with just 8 seats in comparison to the 14 seats available on other long-haul aircraft, providing even more exclusivity and privacy to customers.
Created specifically for the Boeing787-9, the new First suite had been designed based on feedback from customers, firmly placingcomfort at the heart of the experience whilst maximising space.
The suites include four new storage areas. A new ottoman next to the adjustable footstool has enough room for shoes, handbags and personal items, while the personal suiter for jackets and coats is accessible without the customer having to move from their seat.
A new locker positioned at eye-level is perfect for smaller personal effects such as tablets, spectacles, passport andwash-bags. A handy mirror has also been fitted to the inside of the locker door for personal grooming.
The seat and in-flight entertainment consolehasbeen updated with a new handset, much like a smartphone, integrated into the seat from which travellers can control their in-flight entertainment. During flight, the handset can be docked so that customers are also able to watch one item, such as the moving map, on the handset and another, such as a film, on the 23inch fixed screen. This also means travellers will be able to enjoy gate-to-gate entertainment, without having to stow their television for take-off and landing
The smart 'jog-dial', that previously controlled the seat's recline, now manages five additional functions including the headrest and lumbar inflate and a 'global' lighting control to set both ambient and reading lighting.
TheFirst cabin on the Boeing 787-9 was developed byForpeople, London, working together with the airline’s in-house teams and leading British suppliers, includingPrototrim, which developed the high quality soft leather and fabric trim within the suite, and London-based Pritchard Themis who worked on the suite and cabin lighting.
The 42-seatClub World, 39-seatWorld Traveller Plus and 127-seatWorld Traveller cabins are identical to those found on the 787-8 aircraft.
Both the 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft feature the Thales inflight entertainment system.
787-10The 787-10 is the latest Dreamliner aircraft to join the British Airways fleet and features 256 seats across four cabins, 8 in First, 48 in Club World, 35 in World Traveller Plus and 165 in World Traveller.
The 787-10 features the Club Suite, British Airways' latest business class product whichoffers direct aisle access from every seat and a door for enhanced privacy. Each seat converts into a luxurious 79" fully flat-bed and offers 40% more storage space compared to the current Club World seat.
The Club Suite uses technology to make the flying experience even more comfortable; with digital seat functions, high speed Wi-Fi and PC power ports in every seat. High definition gate-to-gate programming with 18.5 inch inflight entertainment screens with the latest films and music.
The 787-10 features the latest British Airways' World Traveller Plus and World Traveller seating, which can also be found on the Airbus A350 and 777 aircraft, with the latest generation of Panasonic's inflight entertainment system.
